Introduction

Composite metal foams (CMFs) are hybrid structures in which the foam structure can be interpreted as a composite (for example in the case of the so called metal matrix syntactic foams (MMSFs) that consisting of hollow inclusions and metallic matrix) or the foamed base metal acts as a matrix of a hybrid composite (for example a foams that contains ceramic reinforcement in their cell walls or a MMFS reinforced by ceramic fibers in their critical load bearing sections).

The main advantage of CMFs is in their low density, high specific strength and outstanding mechanical energy absorption connected to thermal and chemical stability. As structural parts, the mechanical properties of the CMFs are extremely important, as well as their failure mechanisms.

The MTA-BME Lendület Composite Metal Foams Research Group is established to explore new materials and relationships in the field of CMFs for diverse structural applications.

Goals

The main aim of the research project is to (i) develop and produce CMFs with different inner structures, (ii) to map the mechanical properties and failure modes in quasi-static, dynamic and cyclic loadings, with special focus on the load bearing capability and energy absorption and (iii) to develop and test structures as functional materials that may exhibit outstanding properties for given applications.

For the successful fulfillment and complete understanding of the above mentioned aims, extensive microstructural and mechanical tests and their critical evaluation are needed and planned.

As a result, the better understanding as well as the broadening of the beneficial application possibilities of CMFs is expected.

Other activities

All of the members of the MTA-BME Lendület Composite Metal Foams Research Group are also active in teaching of materials testing and engineering, physics and applied mechanics.
