5th National Welding Competition

On the 21st of April, the 5th National Welding Competition was organized with great success by the Welding Section of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. The Welding Section is a student’s self-motivating organization, which operates for 40 years. In this year totally 50 university students from 5 universities participated in the contest.

The participants had to count on their knowledge at 14 stations, the work of each station was ensured by active companies and organizations in welding and material science. The tasks were not only theoretical, but participants had to apply the acquired knowledge in several challenges in practice. During the theoretical tasks the students proved the knowledge in the correction of wrong WPS’s, calculation of necessary shielding gas amount for arc welding, describing Fe-C phase diagram with cooling curves. On the practical side, students could also encounter different non-destructive testing methods, heat treatment, resistance spot welding, welding robot programming and manual arc welding. At one of the stations, the contestants were introduced to the eu-WELD project. Each student received an eu-WELD brochure, which contained the main information, objectives and goals of the project. Using this brochure the contesters filled out a questionnaire about the eu-WELD project members and their main field of activity.

The competition was supported by several companies, so all the start-up team returned home with some gifts, and the teams that won the most prominent rankings were awarded high prizes.

The competition was supported by:

  • Department of Materials Science and Technology
  • BÖHLER-UDDEHOLM Hungary Ltd.
  • Crown International Ltd.
